Hyde Park is perfect for anyone who wants walkability, dining options, and the old nostalgic charm of a historic neighborhood.
Residents can take advantage of enjoying walking, biking, and/or jogging on Bayshore Boulevard, entertainment of Downtown Tampa, and shopping and dining at Hyde Park Village, and SoHo. There are also parks that include fun for children, as well as basketball, baseball/softball/kickball, and our furry friends as well.
Hyde Park History
The Hyde Park neighborhood was one of Tampa's first established communities in the 1880s by railroad financier Henry B. Plant. It was colonized when Plant built the first bridge across the Hillsborough River at Lafayette Street, which is now known as Kennedy Boulevard today. The first house in the neighborhood was built by James Watrous (who also has a street named after him) in the year 1882. Growth occurred relatively quickly, and a street car line was put in on Swann Ave and Rome Ave. This is the reason for the wideness of those two streets, while most other streets in the neighborhood are much narrower, and thus can be challenging for those with larger vehicles, so be polite, and patient, and follow road etiquette. The area where Old Hyde Park Village is today was originally intersected by Cork Avenue, Dakota Avenue, and Inman Ave. all intersected roughly where the Meat Market is located today. The only part of Cork Avenue left today is called Snow Avenue.
